Perfect Houseplants? How about an exotic hybrid?

Huw Warren

Huw Warren

Back in the early ’90s saxophonist Mark Lockheart, pianist/accordionist Huw Warren and bassist Dudley Phillips were three Perfect Houseplants (drummer Martin France was the fourth). Since then they have been involved in countless other bands either as leaders or sidemen.

And they are back playing together tonight for Birmingham Jazz with Zoot Warren on drums under the title Title Brasil + Mark Lockheart. The project comes out of Huw Warren’s abiding love of Brazilian music and especially that of the extraordinary and utterly unique Hermeto Pascoal. Warren mixed Pascoal’s and his own compositions inspired by the man on a 2009 trio album with France and bassist Peter Herbert called Hermeto + (it’s on the Basho label and my review of it is HERE).

Tonight’s gig at The Red Lion in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter would be a tantalising listen if it was just the Hermeto + music from a Warren-led trio… the fact that one of the finest saxophonists around will also be in the house is the cherry on the top of this sundae – or should that be the lime in this Caipirinha?

  • Trio Brasil + Mark Lockheart, 7.45pm today a The Red Lion in Warstone Lane, Birmingham B18 6NG. Full details on the Birmingham Jazz website HERE.
