My top five Midland gigs – November 2016

If you are going to try a few gigs in the English Midlands this month, these are the ones I’d choose from first:

Saturday 12
Andrew Bain Embodied Hope Quartet
Jazzlines, CBSO Centre, Birmingham
8pm, £12.50
The drummer’s Transatlantic all-star band playing Bain’s seven-movement work inspired by the necessary aspects of embodied hope. Should by uplifting!

Sunday 20
Robert Glasper Experiment
Jazzlines, Town Hall, Birmingham
8pm, £25/20.50
In the opinion of many, the most influential jazz musician of recent years. Jazz, hip-hop, R&B and more all feed into the pianist’s distinctive style.

Charlie Hunter

Charlie Hunter

Monday 21
Charlie Hunter
Jazzlines, Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath, Birmingham
8pm, £18
The one-man-band seven-string guitarist plays bass, rhythm and lead simultaneously. Add the one-man-band drummer Bobby Previte, plus two horns and you have three bands for the price of one.

Tuesday 22
Peter Brötzmann & Heather Leigh
TDE Promotions/Fizzle, mac, Birmingham
8pm, £10
The legendary German reedsman collaborates with American pedal steel guitarist. A finely nuanced exploration of jazz’s more elemental realms, or the nearest free improvisation gets to frightening, depending upon how your ears respond.

John Abercrombie

John Abercrombie

Monday 28
John Abercrombie & Marc Copland
Birmingham Conservatoire Recital Hall, Birmingham
1.05pm, £10
Lunchtime gig and a very rare chance to see two brilliant U.S. jazz musicians visiting Birmingham to give masterclasses at the Conservatoire. Worth bunking off work for!

  • There are, of course, many more gigs than just these that are worthy of your attention and attendance. For a guide to what’s on jazzwise in Birmingham this month and next, grab a copy of the latest Jazz In Birmingham leaflet from venues around the city, or have a look at a PDF on the Jazz In Birmingham website which is HERE.
