Andrea Vicari
Pianist Andrea Vicari was commissioned to write a suite for the 2007 Music At Leasowes Bank festival in Shropshire, and The Mirror was the result. Nearly a decade later she has had the chance to record it and the suite is currently being played live again as Vicari’s band tours the land. The group is in Birmingham this early evening for a Jazzlines performance in the Symphony Hall foyer, will be at the Hive in Shrewsbury tomorrow evening for Shrewsbury Jazz Network, and at Stratford Jazz at Stratford Arts House in Stratford-Upon-Avon on Wednesday next week.
With Andrea on the album – released on 33 Records – and on the tour are Croatian guitarist Elvis Stanić, plus Mornington Lockett on tenor saxophone, Dorian Lockett on bass and Nic France on drums.
The music is lively modern British jazz with some influences from elsewhere on the planet, including a South African groove on Caliban’s Dance and a flamenco feel in El Pinguino, complete with Spanish guitar and castanet percussion.
