The Jonathan Silk Big Band in the back garden at The Spotted Dog
It has developed into a much anticipated annual event – the summer Sunday afternoon gathering in back garden of The Spotted Dog in Digbeth.
With as many musicians as punters – and a healthy overlap between the two – it packs a lot of notes into the time and generates an energy which seems to feed on itself and mushroom as the afternoon progresses and turns into evening. I can only imagine how bonkers it gets later on!
This year’s Sunday Big Band Special! (the exclamation mark is fully justified) also marks a changing of the Spotted Dog guard. Out with one pair of Spotted Dog Bros (Jonathan Silk and Richard Foote) and in with another (Sean Gibbs and David Ferris). So join them and a whole bunch of trumpeters, trombonists, saxophonists and rhythm sections – and be prepared to be blown away.
The full prgramme is this, with appropriate explanations all shamelessly stolen from the event’s Facebook event page:
2pm – The Notebenders kick off proceedings.. come down and support this amazing community big band!
3:15pm – Kinda Dukish led by Mike Fletcher Snr. and exploring the works of the legendary Duke Ellington!
4:30pm – Birmingham Jazz Orchestra led by Sean Gibbs and exploring the music of composer/musicians within the band!
5:45pm – Jonathan Silk Big Band live and loud!! Capping the run of big bands in the garden and getting the party started!
7pm – GorillaBot live and potentially louder, these guys are a wicked energy, fresh from New St fame! Moving the party indoors…
