BJO has some big beasts in the band tonight

John O'Gallagher

Birmingham Jazz Orchestra is playing this evening at the Actress & Bishop in Ludgate Hill, Birmingham, and among their ranks will be two older men, alto saxophonist John O’Gallagher and trombonist Hans Koller. They will be playing arrangements by Koller.

The band, which contains the cream of young Birmingham jazz talent, was formed in late 2014 by trumpeter Sean Gibbs and released its first album – Burns, composed by Gibbs – a year later. My review is HERE.

John O’Gallagher recently moved from the U.S. to take up PhD studies at Birmingham Conservatoire. Hans Koller is a tutor at the Conservatoire and recently released a triple vinyl album, Retrospection, on Stoney Lane Records.

The full orchestra line-up is: conductor Sean Gibbs; trumpets Tom Syson, Mike Adlington, Alex Astbury,
Hugh Pascall; trombones Tom Dunnett, Richard Foote, Hans Koller, Andrew Clennell; saxophones: John O’Gallagher, Elliot Drew, John Fleming, Lluis Mather, Alicia Gardener-Trejo; piano David Ferris; guitar Ben Lee; bass Stuart Barker; drums Jonathan Silk.

  • This is a Radiophonic promotion from Romarna Campbell, things get going after 8pm and tickets are £8 (£5 cons) on the door.
