Second Legends Festival comes to Jewellery Quarter in May

MonkGottliebHeaderThe Legends are being celebrated earlier this year. After their highly successful first Legends Festival in July last year, Birmingham Jazz is raising a glass to the great jazz players of the past a little earlier in the calendar year.

The second JQ Jazz Legends Festival will be happening at venues around Birmingham’s characterful Jewellery Quarter from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 May.

There will be two tributes to Thelonious Monk (both featuring saxophonist Tony Kofi), the Sun Ra Arkestra will be the focus of a performance by Sid Peacock’s Surge Orchestra, and the jazz divas will be toasted with a raised glass and some fine standards by singer Juliet Kelly.

Other legends being celebrated are Jim Hall, Bob Brookmeyer, Jimmy Giuffre, Joe Harriott, Bill Evans and Tony Levin, and other players performing over the three days include Jeremy Price, Kevin Figes, Clark Tracey and Kate Williams.

There are individual ticketed events and free ones, too, and you can pay as you go or opt for a day or weekend ticket.

Look out for more on thejazzbreakfast in the weeks to come – including a Q&A with Juliet Kelly – and a special shout-out for a real Jazz Breakfast on the Saturday morning of the Festival.
