New York cellist is the latest of Tony’s special visitors

Okkyung Lee

The next TDE Promotions gig at the mac in Birmingham is a trio of Okkyung Lee from New York with London saxophonist John Butcher and Birmingham drummer Mark Sanders. This follows highly successful TDE gigs last year which included a performance by Anglo-Norwegian duo Food with local trumpeter Percy Pursglove.

Tony Dudley-Evans told me: “Okkyung Lee is an amazing improvising cellist, originally from South Korea but now based in New York.  John and Mark have long been keen on working with her as a trio.”

Lee has a CV which includes working with Laurie Anderson, Vijay Iyer, Wadada Leo Smith and John Zorn. Butcher and Sanders are among the most admired of British players on the international improv scene.

The gig is in one of the best spaces I know to experience music close up – the little Hexagon at the mac, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham.  It’s next Wednesday 3 February at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10.
