The five musicians who will go through to the final of the BBC Young Musician 2016 Jazz Award have been announced. And they include Birmingham Conservatoire final year student Elliott Sansom.

Sansom (21) is a pianist and he joins Alexandra Ridout (17) trumpet, Tom Ridout (21) saxophone/recorder, Tom Smith (20) saxophone, and Noah Stoneman (15) piano.

The final is on Saturday 12 March at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, and the Gwilym Simcock Trio will be assisting the finalists.

Elliott was recently heard at the CBSO Centre opening for the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra Residency Quintet – he and other Conservatoire students had been sitting alongside the full Maria Schneider band in workshops as part of the orchestra’s visit to Birmingham last November.
