Birmingham-based bass player Chris Mapp releases new recordings from his band Gonimoblast on Bandcamp today. They go be the collective title Always Darkness Before Dawnn.
Gonimoblast boasts an impressive line-up of Chris on bass and electronics, Mark Sanders on drums and percussion, Dan Nicholls on keyboards and electronics, Sam Wooster on trumpet and Leafcutter John on electronics.
The band was formed in 2013 and performed at a SOUNDkitchen night, as well as providing support for Polar Bear at the Hare & Hounds last year.
Chris describes his inspirations for this band and this music as doom metal and the Norwegian improv scene.
Chris is one of the 2014/15 Jazzlines Fellows and this recording project is one of the first fruits of that fellowship. There will be more recordings released in the coming months and a series of live performances as well.
Phil Woods, of Jazzlines, said: “Gonimoblast’s first studio album is certainly not to be missed and we are absolutely thrilled to be able to support Chris in the unfolding of this musical adventure through THSH’s Jazzlines programme and thanks to the support of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
“It is thanks to the likes of Chris and Gonimoblast that Birmingham is now a leading jazz centre for the UK.”
