Mike Collins – And Suddenly, Evening

and suddenly evening(Suitepieces Records spr0002)

Collins is a pianist from Bath, and for this album, his second, he is joined by Lee Goodall on saxophones, Ashley John Long on bass and Greg White on drums.

The programme is a mix of Collins originals and tunes by Thelonious Monk and Cole Porter among others, and the personnel shrinks to three or two and then expands again to the full four depending on  the way Collins sees the arrangements.

It’s a pleasant set, generally laid-back and relaxed, occasionally adding some momentum and tension. All four players get a chance to stretch out.

Highlights are a bit of a romp through Cole Porter’s Everything I Love, the Jarrettish original Flat Six, and a piano and bass duo version of Oleo De Mujer Con Sombrero, a Bobo Stenson reworking of the melody written by Silvio Rodriguez.

  • The Mike Collins Quartet is playing the Jazzlines Free Jazz session in the Symphony Hall cafe bar at 5pm on Friday 27 February. More here.
