Not Your Guide To The London Jazz Festival

Between this Friday and Sunday 23 November, our capital city will be awash with jazz. You won’t be able to get a seat on the tube – they’ll all be taken by double basses. They’ll be pulling saxophones out of the Thames on the hour. Name a fab jazz musician and you can bet your 50p they’re in the programme: Branford Marsalis (sold out already, actually); Stanley Clarke (ditto); Kurt Elling; Bill Frisell; Dee Dee Bridgewater; Dave Douglas, Charles Lloyd and Joe Lovano (all together!) – they’ll all be there.

But you won’t. That’s because you live in Alnwick or Accrington. Or Yarm or Yeovil. Or loads of other places alphabetically in between. And you have a job. And you have other commitments, And you are saving up your holiday allowance. Or you have already had it all. And anyway, it’s damned expensive getting to, around, and enjoying our capital city.

So welcome to the Not Your Guide To The London Jazz Festival, and a fair number of reasons to be cheerful. Of course, some of these gigs might be a little way from Alnwick or Yeovil… but then you’ve got a castle and some lovely beaches nearby or Jack The Treacle Eater and a Four Quartets location, and there’s more to life than just jazz.

Anyway, here are some choice non-London Jazz Festival gigs between Friday 14 and Sunday 23 November, including two other festivals, at Hull and Teignmouth:
