Leucocyte, the recording EST had delivered to their record company ACT less than a month before Esbjorn Svensson, the trio’s leader, died in a diving accident, has just arrived in the morning post. It’s thrilling to listen to – a disc made up completely of the trio jamming in a Sydney studio – and a hugely satisfying one for EST fans. But inevitably there’s also the added depth given by the fact that we know it closes a chapter in modern jazz – a chapter which saw European jazz finally come out from the shadows of American domination, and which brought a new, younger audience to this great musical form.

EST leave a profound legacy behind them and one which is already enriching new jazz. Leucocyte is released in the UK on 1 September.

  1. I managed to get hold of a copy of Leucocyte yesterday and managed to listen to it last night. There have been times when the band seemed to be heading dangerously close to the middle of the road, but the overall impression I got from Leucocyte was that they were heading away from it again. You cannot help wondering what it would have sounded like live – especially the part where the drumming reminded me of Jimi Hendrix’s Machine Gun.

  2. That machine gun drumming starts to be introduced gradually at about 11 minutes into track two, Premonition: Earth, and really takes off at 12:20

  3. Just read a very considered review of the album in The Guardian. Check it out here http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/aug/29/jazz2
